Abstract/Preface
Conflicts in rural communities are deeply rooted in competition over scarce natural resources, land tenure insecurity, socio-cultural differences, and weak institutional frameworks. Left unmanaged, such conflicts can escalate, leading to violence, displacement, loss of livelihoods, and long-term developmental setbacks. However, rural communities possess rich indigenous knowledge and traditional conflict resolution systems that, when appropriately harnessed, can address disputes in a participatory, inclusive, and culturally sensitive manner. Effective rural conflict management mechanisms contribute significantly to social cohesion, peace building, local governance, and economic stability. They also provide accessible and affordable alternatives to formal legal systems, especially in areas where state institutions are weak or absent. Importantly, the effectiveness of these mechanisms are amplified when supported through inclusive participation of all community members particularly women and youth and when harmonized with formal state-led processes.
