Abstract/Preface

Death determined by neurological criteria (DNC), commonly known as brain death, is an accepted medical and legal definition of death. It is characterized by the permanent cessation of all functions of the brain, including the brainstem. The concept evolved with advancements in intensive care, which made it possible to artificially sustain cardiac and respiratory activity even after devastating and irreversible brain injury. Accurate recognition of DNC is fundamental for ethical end-of-life decision-making, discontinuation of non-beneficial life support, and facilitation of organ donation.
