Abstract/Preface

Mobile health (mHealth) is the application of mobile devices, applications and digital technologies to assist in the provision of health care services, health monitoring, disease management and health education. This chapter summarizes the history, important technologies, use cases, advantages and obstacles associated with mHealth. It underscores the role of technology like mobile devices, wearables, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and telemedicine in enhancing patient engagement and access to health care. However, it is still not fully applicable due to lack of standardization, data security, interoperability problems, and limited evidence-based validation. Overall, mHealth can have a positive impact on healthcare delivery, but there are challenges in the regulatory, technical and quality aspects which need to be overcome for the technology to be used safely and effectively.
